Walker Methodist Passages Program

Ann Bergstrom | Mar 25, 2016

We understand that entering into the final stages of life brings to the surface many feelings and emotions for everyone involved. Guided by the principals of our Walker Methodist founders, we recognize the power of spirituality and faith as a source of comfort, meaning, peace, and hope. We create a framework of understanding during this often challenging, yet natural journey with our end of life program known as “Passages”.

What is the Passages Program?

The Passages Program is Walker Methodist’s in-house end of life care program. It was started in 2001 and provides additional care, support, and education for residents and their family members in the final stages of life. The Passages Program nurtures an environment that is both caring and peaceful.

What is the Dignity Quilt?

The Dignity Quilt is another part of the Passages Program. When a loved one has died, a handmade quilt is brought into the room and placed over the Resident’s body lying in bed. Family members, friends, and staff gather in the room as a reading is shared in honor of the Resident. These gatherings reflect our belief that dignity is always important, including the final moments of life and also after death. This gathering also provides an opportunity for staff and families to come together to share a common loss and to speak words of appreciation and care.

We recognize that each person approaches life transitions in their own particular ways. Our spiritual care offerings, including the Passages Program, are designed to honor your wishes, and to compliment your preferences. Whether it’s Miracle of Music or discovering a familiar routine, we will work with you to find the perfect combination of care.

Chaplaincy at Walker Methodist at End of Life

Spiritual Care is provided with on-site chaplains at Walker Methodist. They are an available resource for all, regardless of one’s religious preference or spiritual path. Chaplains support individuals and family members by providing a listening ear and a calm, nonjudgmental, and healing presence in times of transition, loss, grief, illness, and emotional distress with the intention of creating meaning and inner peace.

Spiritual Life at Walker Methodist

Our Mission, Vision, and Values come to life with our Spiritual Care. We recognize that spirituality is a deep, inner resource a person draws from, especially in times of change and transition. We are here so you don’t have to go through it alone.

Life. And all the living that goes with it. Enhancing the lives of older adults through a culture of care, respect, and service. Walker Methodist’s Mission statement lives through our end of life program.
