Reverend David Derksen, M. Div., BCC
Director for Spiritual Life & Enrichment
Rev. David Derksen joined Walker Methodist in March of 2016. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from Carleton College, and a Master of Divinity from Yale Divinity School where he worked later as a Teaching Fellow educating professional and graduate level students. Most recently, Rev. Derksen worked for a large hospice organization in the state of Minnesota as a staff chaplain. Rev. Derksen is a Board Certified Chaplain (BCC) with the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) meaning he has achieved the highest professional standards in providing emotional and spiritual care in clinical healthcare settings.
As the Director for Spiritual Life & Enrichment, Rev. Derksen wears several hats. Pastorally, he makes one-on-one spiritual care visits, leads Bible studies, opens meetings with prayer and reflections, educates new team members on the Spiritual Life department, leads worship services, and co-chairs the Walker Methodist Clinical Ethics Committee. As an administrator, he watches the department’s budget and funding, develops Spiritual Life department policies, casts vision for Spiritual Life at Walker Methodist, and supports the Walker Methodist Spiritual Life team.
Rev. Derksen is most passionate about providing excellent spiritual life support, advocating for professional chaplaincy, and expanding his reach to enrich the lives of more people. It brings him great joy to be with people during sacred moments in their lives as well as to hear their amazing stories. He is excited to continue his ministry to older adults as well as to be a part of the Walker Methodist family.
In his free time, Rev. Derksen enjoys pumping iron, hanging out at coffee shops drinking strong coffee, reading, writing, and keeping up with current events. He also enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter. Rev. Derksen hopes to be remembered as a godly man who left a legacy of love and integrity.
